Alkaline Trio At The Camden Underworld
Live review from last night's intimate Alkaline Trio show at the Camden Underworld.

It’s no surprise that by the time Alkaline Trio [8] hit the stage (fashionably late, of course), the walls of The Underworld are dripping with the sweat of the lucky few who managed to get their hands on tickets for tonight’s show. Despite acting as an unofficial release party for their seventh studio album ‘This Addiction’, the Chicago three-piece blitz through a set surprisingly light on new material, yet wholly satisfying nonetheless.
The likes of ‘Fatally Yours’ and ‘Time To Waste’ were written for basement shows like this, while the roar that greets the opening chords of ‘Stupid Kid’ reaffirms that the band’s flirtation with the mainstream never impacted on their ability to write a solid anthem or two. A few songs in, Skiba assures the crowd of his hungover state – which had he kept quiet, we would have been none the wiser – their set has all the energy and musicianship of a band half their age and at the peak of their fitness.

As a band that have the ability to sell out venues dozens of times larger than this, tonight proves that the 'Trio can still completely own a show like few others. By the time the house lights return at the end of ‘Radio’ one thing is crystal clear – these three veterans have neither lost the ability to put on an old-school punk rock show, nor any of the passion or excitement that comes with it.
